Finding Career Success

The meaning of “Career Success” is unique to every individual. For some, it means achieving work-life balance in a role that allows them to pursue a personal passion or life as a working parent. Others strive for the large, regular paycheck and a C-suite title. Regardless of the Career Success goal you’ve defined for yourself, one thing that remains consistent throughout is your need and desire to learn and grow, to produce positive results or make a positive impact.  

Finding this success can take some work, but it’s not impossible. Here are some tips for finding that modicum of peace and a sense of fulfillment in your career journey to success.

Don’t be afraid of Career Changes.

Pivoting your career path means navigating new waters and possibly doing so in an entirely different industry. It can feel incredibly intimidating, especially if you have little network or knowledge of where you want to go. Trying to decide on–and execute–a career change in isolation can send your fear into a depressing spiral and can make the entire process more painful than it needs to be. If you don’t have a supportive network of professionals, mentors or friends in the career you’d like to explore and pivot into, set aside some time each week to review Linkedin Profiles of some of the professionals working in the job or industry you’re interested in switching careers to, and proactively reach out to connect with them to get a deeper understanding of their careers.

While a career filled with plenty of twists and turns can seem overwhelming, embracing the change allows you to redefine success and create a career that showcases your best skills and find career fulfillment. It takes work, but it is possible to switch gears no matter where you are in your career.

Stick to your values.

It is essential to understand your professional values—and commit to sticking with them as your career evolves. Regardless of your career choice, values remain constant. Some examples include: 

Having Impact, Creativity, Recognition, Social Service, Achievement, Adventure, Balance, Autonomy, and Security.

Identifying and recognizing your values is just the first step. You also need to be able to recognize when your current position or company holds these values or goes against them. While a career journey can get overwhelming, you mustn’t put your professional values aside or compromise them, as you will find yourself unhappy and dissatisfied with your job.

Never Stop Networking.

With the pandemic stretching on with no end in sight and when virtual networking becomes a norm, it is even more so important for you to take the initiative to work on the strength of your network. The secret? Focus on creating lasting, authentic relationships and foster meaningful conversations and relationships.

In the past, networking opportunities are limited to being in—or being able to travel to—physical locations such as event halls. In this digitalized future where working remotely is accepted as the norm, there are countless opportunities to connect with people and groups no matter where you or they are based in the world. In 2021, the way to truly represent yourself in a virtual and remote world is to have a solid and consistent digital presence available 24/7.
